Transforming Spaces For Life

Decluttering is very “in” at the moment, with the wonderful Stacey Solomon and her Sort Your Life Out team leading the charge on the BBC. My favourite bit of the programme is the one-month-later lookback where they find out how the families are faring after their shock-and-awe week of decluttering. What you see, every week without fail, is that not only has their space been decluttered, but the participants lives have been transformed. Whether it’s a family who have gained a proper dining space, a granny who can now have her grandchildren over to stay, or a student who has a space to work, the changes are never just about owning less.

I chose to get my professional decluttering certification with Joshua Becker of Becoming Minimalist (rather than Marie Kondo) because having followed him for several years, I realised I am fiercely attached to his focus on the after-effects of decluttering. In particular, I love how the Becker Method starts with clients being asked to set out those life-changing goals before you even open a bin bag. Not just simple “I want to declutter” goals, but the deep and meaningful ones like “I want to be able to invite people round for dinner without feeling embarrassed”.

So if you think your home needs a bit of TLC and you’re considering decluttering (whether by yourself or with the help of a professional declutterer), I strongly recommend that you take some time to consider what your life could be like if you owned less. It’s a powerful motivator and is the reason for my tagline “Transforming Spaces for Life”.
